The Bedford Basketball Winter League has six leagues: Boys recreational basketball has divisions for boys grades 1-8. Boys travel basketball has divisions for boys grades 3-8. Boys biddy basketball is a division for grades 9-12. Girls recreational basketball has divisions for all grades 1-8. Girls travel basketball has divisions for grades 3-8. Girls biddy basketball is a division for grades 9-12.
Registration fees for the 1st/2nd grade division is $55/player. All other divisions are $75/player. There is a family maximum of $225. This does not include travel fees. Travel team registrations fees are an additional $175 (after team selection) and include a Bedford travel team uniform and shooter shirt. TOPWhat is the level of play for each league?
Recreational leagues maintain an instructional and social environment where everyone is encouraged to play and equal playing time is mandatory. The level of competitiveness increases with age.
Travel leagues are competitive, require a tryout to be selected to the team, have an 8 minute minimum playing time (1/4 of the game) and require a high level of commitment. Playing time beyond the 8 minutes must be earned and is at the discretion of the coach.TOPWhen and where do recreational divisions play?
Recreation teams play a one hour game weekly beginning in December. Grade 2 plays Saturday at Memorial School, grades 3 and 4 play Saturday at Riddle Brook, boys in grades 5 and 6 play Saturday at McKelvie and the girls play at Peter Woodbury. Grades 7 and 8 play Saturday at Lurgio, and 9-12th grade boys play Sunday at Bedford High School. Girls in grades 9-12 play at Lurgio on Sundays. The season concludes in mid-March.TOPDo recreational teams have scheduled practices?
Grade 3-8 recreational teams have a one hour weekly practice on a week night at either 6,7 or 8:00pm. Younger grades have the earlier times, older grades the later times.
The 1st/2nd division grade does not have a practice during the week, their Saturday session is 30 minutes of instruction with their team and a 30 minute scrimmage with the other team in the gym. The High School Biddy teams also do not have a scheduled weekly practice.
TOPAre volunteer coaches needed for recreational division teams?
Yes. If you wish to coach you will have the opportunity to indicate that during the registration process. All candidates must register for the recreational league during open registration beginning September 1st. At the time of registration you are able to express interest in trying out for a travel team. A travel coach will contact you with tryout information. Tryouts are scheduled to begin in mid-October.TOPWhen and where do travel divisions play?
Bedford travel teams play in the Manchester Suburban Basketball League (MSBL).
Home games are played on Sundays between noon and 7:00pm. Grades 3-4 play at Riddle Brook School, grades 5-6 play at Peter Woodbury School and grades 7-8 play at McKelvie Middle School.
